A Rising Star Challenges Cricket History

The IPL 2026 season is witnessing a spectacle that few could have predicted. Rajasthan Royals’ young batting prodigy, Vaibhav Sooryavanshi, is not just making headlines; he is actively dismantling bowling attacks and rewriting the record books. With his latest explosive performance against the Lucknow Super Giants, the 15-year-old sensation has moved within striking distance of a record held by the legendary Chris Gayle for over a decade.

The Chase for the Six-Hitting Crown

Vaibhav Sooryavanshi currently sits on 53 sixes for the 19th edition of the tournament. He requires just seven more maximums to surpass Chris Gayle’s monumental record of 59 sixes, established during the 2012 season while playing for Royal Challengers Bengaluru. To put this feat into perspective, Sooryavanshi would have been a mere toddler when Gayle first set this benchmark in 2012, highlighting the incredible nature of his rapid ascent in the sport.

Former Indian all-rounder Irfan Pathan, who has been closely monitoring the youngster’s progress, believes the record is all but certain to fall. In a recent discussion with JioStar, Pathan expressed his awe at the youngster’s impact. ‘He is going after Gayle’s record of 59 sixes and has already hit 53 this season. The youngster is creating the same level of fear that we experienced when bowling to Chris, and that record is clearly facing a massive threat,’ Pathan remarked.

The Masterclass Against Lucknow Super Giants

The Rajasthan Royals’ recent victory against the Lucknow Super Giants was the perfect stage for Sooryavanshi to showcase his maturity beyond his years. After Lucknow set a formidable target of 220, largely thanks to Mitchell Marsh’s brilliant 96 off 57 balls and Josh Inglis’s aggressive 60 off 29 deliveries, the Royals needed a strong start. They found exactly that through their opening pair.

Sooryavanshi and captain Yashasvi Jaiswal combined for a blistering 75-run opening stand in just 39 balls. While Jaiswal played a vital role, scoring 43 off 23 balls, it was Sooryavanshi who stole the show. The southpaw hammered 93 runs off just 38 balls, including ten massive sixes and seven boundaries. His knock proved instrumental in ending the Royals’ three-match losing streak and securing a crucial seven-wicket victory.

A Balanced Approach to Batting

Despite his aggressive reputation, Sooryavanshi displayed significant tactical awareness during his Player of the Match performance. Reflecting on his innings, he noted that his approach was deliberate. ‘The wicket was looking very good when I was sitting out during the first innings. I didn’t want to rush my innings right from the start and wanted to take some time,’ the Bihar-born batter explained.

He further added, ‘I wanted to build the innings because it helps the other batters. I know I can hit fours and sixes at any time during the chase, so my priority was to bat well and take the game deep.’ This level of composure, combined with his raw power, has transformed Sooryavanshi from a promising prospect into a genuine match-winner for the Rajasthan Royals.

What Lies Ahead

With Dhruv Jurel providing excellent support in the middle order with his unbeaten 53, the Royals have found a winning rhythm again. All eyes, however, remain on the young opener as he approaches the final stretch of the league stage. Cricket fans and experts alike are waiting to see if he can claim the crown from the ‘Universe Boss’ and etch his name into IPL history. If his current form is any indication, Chris Gayle’s 14-year-old record might be witnessing its final days in the spotlight.
