A New Era for Cricket in Northeast India

Cricket in India has long been dominated by traditional powerhouses and metropolitan hubs. However, in recent years, there has been a concerted effort to push the boundaries of the sport, extending its reach into the furthest corners of the country. On April 28, this vision took a massive leap forward with a historic investment in the Northeastern state of Mizoram.

Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi virtually inaugurated a state-of-the-art indoor cricket academy located in the heart of the state’s capital, Aizawl. This facility is not merely a building but a symbol of the government’s commitment to decentralizing sporting excellence and ensuring that talent, regardless of geography, has the opportunity to shine.

A Massive Investment in Sporting Excellence

The scale of the project is reflected in its budget. The academy was constructed at a staggering cost of Rs. 18.25 crores (approximately $2 million). This ambitious project was made possible through the joint sponsorship and collaboration of the Cricket Association of Mizoram and the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI).

During the inauguration ceremony, Prime Minister Modi emphasized the critical importance of strengthening sporting infrastructure outside of India’s major cities. He noted that such initiatives are designed to nurture up-and-coming talents, providing them with the necessary tools to be catapulted into the national cricketing ecosystem. By bringing elite facilities to Aizawl, the government aims to transform the city into an emerging hub for cricketing development in the entire region.

Deep Dive: Inside the Aizawl Indoor Cricket Academy

The new academy is designed as a comprehensive sports and wellness center, integrating training, fitness, recovery, and spectator management all under one roof. The project, which commenced in July 2023, represents nearly three years of planning and execution to ensure international standards were met.

The facility is divided into specialized zones to cater to every aspect of an athlete’s needs:

  • The Ground Floor: This level is dedicated to holistic health and recovery. It is equipped with a modern gymnasium, a swimming pool, and a cafeteria. To ensure players can recover quickly from intense training sessions, the facility includes specialized ice baths and massage facilities, alongside standard locker rooms.
  • Technical Infrastructure: The building is supported by dedicated IT and electrical rooms to manage the academy’s modern operations.
  • Cricket Training Zone: The core of the facility consists of several indoor cricket training pitches. These pitches provide a professional environment where players can hone their skills without the interruptions of the external environment.
  • Spectator Areas: To encourage community engagement and scouting, the academy features a dedicated viewing deck and a terrace area for spectators.

One of the most significant advantages of this facility, as confirmed by officials from Northeastlivetv, is its ability to support year-round training. In a region where weather conditions can often be unfavorable and unpredictable, the indoor nature of the academy ensures that the training pipeline remains uninterrupted throughout the seasons.

Regional Integration and the Path Forward

The development in Mizoram is part of a broader strategy to elevate cricket across the Northeast. Similar high-end facilities have recently been inaugurated in other states, including Sikkim, Meghalaya, Manipur, Arunachal Pradesh, and Nagaland. This systemic approach ensures that the entire region grows in tandem, creating a competitive environment that benefits all players.

Overcoming Challenges: The Mizoram Journey

Mizoram’s journey in domestic cricket has been one of resilience despite significant hurdles. The state made its official domestic debut during the 2018 season, playing its first match against Nagaland at the Nagaland Cricket Association Stadium in Sovima.

However, the road to success has been steep. In the 2025-26 Ranji Trophy season, the Mizoram team struggled in the Plate Group, finishing at the bottom of the table after suffering five defeats in five matches. For years, the state’s progress has been hindered by limited resources and a lack of professional infrastructure.

The inauguration of the Aizawl Indoor Cricket Academy is expected to be a watershed moment for the state. By providing aspiring cricketers with access to elite training standards, sports science, and consistent practice environments, Mizoram is now better positioned to transition from a participant to a formidable force in India’s domestic circuit.
