The End of a Frustrating Campaign for Chennai Super Kings

The Chennai Super Kings (CSK) saw their IPL 2026 campaign officially draw to a close following a heavy 89-run defeat at the hands of Gujarat Titans on Thursday, May 21. This loss not only dashed the franchise’s hopes of making the playoffs but also brought a quiet end to a season that was heavily overshadowed by the physical fitness and availability of their talismanic figure, MS Dhoni.

Before the tournament commenced, millions of fans across the globe were eagerly counting down the days to see Dhoni back in action, wearing the iconic yellow jersey. Unfortunately, as the matches progressed, his participation remained shrouded in uncertainty. For the first time in the history of the Indian Premier League, the veteran cricketer concluded an entire season without making it into the playing XI for a single match.

MS Dhoni’s Plaguing Injury Timeline in IPL 2026

The hurdles for MS Dhoni began well before the tournament kicked off. During CSK’s pre-season training camp, the former Indian captain suffered a painful calf strain. Early medical assessments suggested that the veteran would only be sidelined for the first two weeks of the competition, giving fans hope of a quick return.

However, the recovery process for the 44-year-old took significantly longer than anticipated. Reports emerged throughout the season indicating that Dhoni was nowhere near 100% match fitness. Given his age and the physical demands of wicketkeeping, the Chennai Super Kings management decided against rushing their star player back into active duty prematurely.

Just as rumors began circulating about a potential return for the final leg of the league stage, misfortune struck again when Dhoni reportedly suffered a thumb injury. CSK’s batting coach, Michael Hussey, later clarified the situation, stating that the veteran wicketkeeper would only return to the squad if Chennai managed to qualify for the IPL 2026 playoffs. With the heavy defeat against Gujarat Titans, those playoff aspirations—and Dhoni’s chances of playing—were completely extinguished.

Will MS Dhoni Still Receive His IPL 2026 Salary?

Despite not playing a single match or even stepping onto the field in a substitute capacity, MS Dhoni will receive his full IPL 2026 salary from the Chennai Super Kings.

This guaranteed payout is tied directly to the nature of his contract. Prior to the season, Dhoni was retained by CSK for  4 crore. This retention was made possible under the IPL’s revived “uncapped player” rule, which permits franchises to retain Indian players who have been retired from international cricket for more than five years at a significantly lower bracket.

Because Dhoni signed a fixed-fee retention contract, his base salary is guaranteed by the franchise regardless of his match participation. However, there is a minor financial caveat: he will not receive his per-match play fee, which stands at  7.5 lakh per game. This match fee is only distributed to players who are part of the matchday squads.

How IPL Player Insurance Protects the Franchise

Many fans wonder if paying a non-playing athlete 4 crore hurts the franchise’s bottom line. In modern professional sports leagues like the IPL, franchises protect themselves against such scenarios through comprehensive player insurance policies.

Under the standard IPL player insurance guidelines, if a contracted player misses matches or the entire tournament due to documented fitness issues or injuries sustained during the contract period, the financial liability is covered by the insurance company. This system ensures that the player receives their guaranteed contract value while the franchise is protected from heavy financial losses due to unforeseen medical setbacks.

A Look Back at MS Dhoni’s IPL Salary Evolution

MS Dhoni has been one of the highest-earning players in the history of the IPL, and his salary trajectory reflects his unparalleled status in Indian cricket.

  • 2008 (Inaugural Season): Dhoni started his IPL journey as the most expensive player in the auction, securing a contract of  6 crore with CSK.
  • Peak Years: As his legacy grew, his annual salary peaked at  15 crore during successive retention cycles.
  • IPL 2026: Transitioned into the uncapped player category, agreeing to a reduced retention figure of  4 crore to help CSK optimize their overall auction purse.

Over his illustrious IPL career, Dhoni has played 278 matches representing both the Chennai Super Kings and the Rising Pune Supergiant. Across these appearances, he has amassed 5,439 runs at an outstanding average of 38.30 and a strike rate of 137.45, solidifying his reputation as one of the greatest finishers and captains the game has ever seen.
