Bethell Stands Firm on IPL Commitment Amid England Debate

Jacob Bethell has doubled down on his decision to honor his IPL contract with Royal Challengers Bengaluru, dismissing external pressure to return to England for County Championship cricket ahead of the Test summer.

The young English batter, speaking ahead of RCB’s Raipur leg of IPL 2026, made it clear that participating in the world’s most high-profile T20 league aligns perfectly with his long-term development.

“This is the marquee tournament of the year, with some of the best cricketers in the world playing in it,” Bethell said. “I definitely don’t think it’s going to hurt my career or stop me from getting better. I think it’s going to do the opposite.”

Criticism and Counterarguments

The debate was ignited by former England captain Alastair Cook, who questioned Bethell’s absence from red-ball cricket, suggesting the youngster might be “sitting on his arse” at the IPL rather than developing in the County Championship.

Yet former England star Kevin Pietersen strongly pushed back, emphasizing the transformative potential of being immersed in the IPL environment.

When Cook made his remarks, Bethell hadn’t featured in RCB’s first six matches. Since then, however, he has opened the batting in four games—though the runs have been hard to come by, with scores of 14, 20, 5, and 4.

Staying Focused Amid the Noise

Bethell remains unfazed by the public debate, acknowledging differing opinions without letting them sway his conviction.

“Everyone’s allowed to have their opinions. That’s absolutely fine. Everyone thinks differently, but from a personal point of view, I think I’ve made the right decision. At the end of the day, I’m pretty happy with where I am.”

His IPL opportunity arose due to Phil Salt’s finger injury, which opened a slot in RCB’s lineup. The timing was notable—Bethell had turned heads earlier in the year with a match-defining hundred against India in the T20 World Cup semi-final, fueling speculation about his inclusion.

Hunger to Contribute

Despite not converting starts, Bethell still appears to have the trust of the RCB management. He was the first to arrive at the nets in Raipur for training, sharing early batting practice with Virat Kohli before rain cut the session short.

Yet Bethell refuses to take that backing for granted.

“I never really feel like I’m fighting for a spot. But I haven’t scored the runs I’ve wanted to—and that’s not helped the team. My aim is to go out there and score runs, get us off to a good start, and I haven’t done that.”

With RCB on a losing streak, Bethell admitted he feels a growing responsibility to deliver a match-winning performance—especially in the upcoming clash against Mumbai Indians.

Chasing Rhythm, Not Just Runs

The 22-year-old highlighted the difficulty of finding rhythm with limited time at the crease.

“As batters, we all strive for perfection—it’s pretty unattainable. It’s tricky to find your rhythm when you’re not spending as much time in the middle as you’d like. My focus is always on what impact I can make in the next game.”

He admitted he hasn’t had the IPL start he envisioned, but maintains a forward-looking mindset.

“The only game that matters is the one tomorrow. And once tomorrow’s done, it’s the next one. My only focus is what’s going to happen on that first ball—and I think that long-term, this approach will serve me well.”

A Starstruck Moment with AB de Villiers

Bethell couldn’t help but laugh when asked about AB de Villiers comparing him to Vaibhav Sooryavanshi, the teenage sensation.

“I’m not sure about Vaibhav [comparisons]! To be honest, I don’t think I’ve ever scored 50 in 14 balls or whatever. Vaibhav’s obviously a great player—but to have someone like AB mention me? That’s pretty cool.”

Batting alongside Virat Kohli, too, has been a dream come true for Bethell—one he’s cherished since his debut last season.

“It’s cool, I’ve said it multiple times. It’s cool to bat with him, be in the dressing room with him. I don’t think it adds pressure. In fact, a lot of the time, people are only watching him—so the pressure’s off. It lets you play more freely.”

Final Word: RCB First

As the press conference wrapped up, Bethell was asked to pick his top four teams in the IPL.

Without hesitation, he smiled and said: “Pretty easy—RCB and three others.”
