SLC relieved at ICC’s mild response to Transformation Committee

A Sigh of Relief for Sri Lankan Cricket

The landscape of Sri Lankan cricket administration has undergone significant upheaval in recent months, yet the anticipated fallout from the international governing body has remained surprisingly muted. It has emerged that SLC relieved at ICC‘s mild response to Transformation Committee, as the International Cricket Council (ICC) refrained from issuing sanctions despite the government’s intervention in the national board’s affairs.

The Context of Government Intervention

The Transformation Committee was established by the Sri Lankan government in May, effectively removing the previously elected office-bearers of Sri Lanka Cricket (SLC). Given the historical precedent, this move naturally invited intense scrutiny. In both 2015 and 2023, the ICC took a firm stance against government interference in the sport, leading to sanctions on each occasion. Notably, in late 2023, the ICC suspended SLC’s membership due to allegations of political overreach by the sports minister.

However, the current situation appears to be unfolding differently. Despite the sweeping changes—which saw the elected board ousted and replaced by a state-appointed committee—the ICC has opted for a measured approach rather than immediate punitive measures.

The Role of the Transformation Committee

The committee, chaired by former politician Eran Wickramaratne, has been tasked with a clear mandate: to rewrite the outdated SLC constitution. The objective, according to the committee, is to align the governance of the sport more closely with the expectations of the Sri Lankan public. Wickramaratne has emphasized that the process is inclusive, involving broad consultations with various stakeholders.

“Even in the debates in parliament, which were not driven by party loyalties, it has been acknowledged that there has to be a change at Sri Lanka Cricket,” Wickramaratne stated. “The job we have is to change the SLC constitution. The stakeholders in that change are the Sri Lankan people. The people can give their ideas. Other stakeholders can also express their ideas. We thought our first role is to listen to those ideas.”

ICC’s Stance and Future Outlook

While no representative from the new SLC setup was invited to the recent quarterly meeting in Ahmedabad, the absence of sanctions is being viewed as a positive signal by the new board. The ICC’s official communication regarding the situation has been notably brief and non-committal. The statement merely noted: “In Sri Lanka, ICC Deputy Chair Imran Khwaja and Devajit Saikia (BCCI) have visited and met with relevant stakeholders to assess ongoing developments.”

The visit by Imran Khwaja earlier in May served as a fact-finding mission, and the lack of subsequent action is being interpreted by many within the SLC as a sign that the ICC is keeping a watchful eye rather than acting with haste. For the members of the Transformation Committee, the mantra remains one of cautious optimism: “So far what we feel is that no news is good news,” one member remarked.

What Lies Ahead

The ultimate goal for the new leadership is to regain full, normalized participation on the international stage. The SLC is hopeful that, as the committee progresses with its constitutional reforms, its members will be invited to attend future ICC meetings. While the situation remains fluid, the current lack of intervention from Dubai suggests that the ICC is willing to observe the internal reform process before making a definitive judgment on the legality and legitimacy of the current administrative structure.

As the cricket fraternity in Sri Lanka watches closely, the focus remains on whether these changes will lead to a more transparent and effective governance model for the sport in the long term. For now, the administration continues its work, bolstered by the lack of immediate international friction.
