The Rise of a New Speedster
The announcement of the Indian squad for the upcoming series against Afghanistan has sent ripples through the cricketing community. While the roster features several established stars, one name has dominated the conversation: Gurnoor Brar. The towering Gujarat Titans pacer, who has steadily made a name for himself in the domestic circuit, has officially received his maiden call-up to the Men in Blue across both the ODI and Test formats.
Selected by chief selector Ajit Agarkar and the BCCI, Brar’s inclusion marks a significant shift in strategy as the national team looks toward its future. Known for his imposing physical presence and ability to extract bounce from any surface, the 25-year-old from Sri Muktsar Sahib, Punjab, is set to bring a new dimension to India’s pace attack.
Early Beginnings and Domestic Dominance
Brar’s journey to the international stage was far from overnight. Standing at a formidable 6’5″, he utilizes his height to great effect, hitting the deck hard and posing constant challenges for batters. His professional journey began in 2022 when he made his first-class debut, but it was the 2024-25 domestic season that truly defined his potential. During the Ranji Trophy, Brar finished as Punjab’s leading wicket-taker, claiming an impressive 26 scalps in just 7 matches.
His red-ball success was mirrored in the T20 format. During the 2024 Sher-E-Punjab T20 tournament, he topped the wicket-takers’ chart with 22 wickets in 11 matches, maintaining a miserly economy rate of 7.33 and an average of 14. These performances were impossible for scouts to ignore, leading to his acquisition by the Gujarat Titans for INR 1.30 crore during the 2025 IPL auction.
The Connection with Shubman Gill
A fascinating subplot in Brar’s rise is his long-standing relationship with India captain, Shubman Gill. Their professional paths have crossed since their Under-19 days. Brar credits the skipper for playing a pivotal role in his early career development. Reflecting on their journey, Brar shared, “I used to bowl to him since our Under-19 days. He saw me bowling and helped me get into the district team. I played for Mohali and was then picked for the Punjab Under-23 side.”
This mutual trust and shared history have translated into a strong on-field dynamic. Having seen Brar’s evolution from his youth years to the senior level, Gill’s advocacy has likely played a part in the selectors finally taking notice of the pacer’s raw talent.
What the Selectors See
BCCI chief selector Ajit Agarkar has been vocal about the vision for the team, identifying Brar as ‘one for the future.’ Agarkar noted that the India A tours provided the management with the perfect window to assess Brar’s skills in high-pressure environments. With the team currently in a phase of development and preparation for upcoming challenges, the inclusion of a bowler with Brar’s specific skill set is a strategic move to add depth to the pace battery alongside the likes of Arshdeep Singh, Prasidh Krishna, and Mohammed Siraj.
Looking Ahead
As Brar prepares for the upcoming series starting on the 6th of June, the pressure will undoubtedly be high. However, having already proven his mettle in first-class cricket with 18 appearances and a consistent record of wicket-taking, he appears ready for the step up. With 12 wickets in his three most recent matches, he enters the national camp in peak form.
